A New Year, A Blank Canvas

I know my last post was technically published in the New Year, so this isn’t my first of 2016. But I will be focusing more on the New Year, so let’s pretend it is my first post of 2016. Happy New Year!

I am very excited for this New Year!  There are many things I am looking forward to in the year 2016.  First and foremost, this will be Brandon’s last year of college/student teaching.  I am so proud of all he has accomplished, and I know he will be an awesome teacher.  I also know that this last year is going to be a hard one for him, so I am really going to try to help him in any way I can and help us to still stay focused on God through all the crazy business.

The other thing that I am very excited about is that Brandon and I will also be celebrating one whole year of marriage on May 16th.  God truly blessed me when He brought Brandon into my life.  I have learned, so many things through our marriage. God has really used it to refine me, and I know he will continue to refine me as the years progress.  I have also learned a lot about myself, mostly how selfish I can be.  Marriage has taught me patience and how to be slow to speak and quick to pray. I know that it is a learning process, and I am very happy that I have the Holy Spirit and a husband who is slow to anger. I think another really important thing marriage has taught me is how to really open up.  I have always been a very reserved person and thankfully Brandon is very good at listening and helping to pull information out of me in a good way. I’m so thankful that God gave me a husband with different strengths and weaknesses than me.

As I mentioned in my last post, I got an acrylics painting set from Brandon for Christmas.  I am very excited because I was also able to purchase an easel, pallet, and some blank canvases with Christmas money.  I have been looking at different styles of painting, and I think I want to try impressionism.  Famous impressionist include people like Vincent Van Gogh and Claude Monet. I like the style because you can really give a picture your own touch, and I really like how much color is involved.  I have everything set up and ready, I’m just waiting for Brandon to start school because it is going to be my hobby while he does homework.  I will try to take step-by-step pictures of what I do, so we can learn together.  I already found a great set of instructional videos on YouTube (click here for the link).

Now I know that it is every ones goal to get healthier in the New Year, so I guess Brandon and I are following the crowd on this one. But seriously, Brandon and I are trying to be healthier people.  Being on a tight budget often leads to buying cheap food and most cheap food is not healthy for you.  But not anymore!  I was very excited to find out that Aldi’s grocery stores are now owned by Trader Joe’s (an upscale health food store, mostly near Chicago and the suburbs). Which means that a lot or should I say almost all of their products are now organic, don’t have artificial flavors, and many are gluten free.  Brandon and I went there at the beginning of the week and decided to get all our groceries.  We got everything from Chicken breast to fish and healthy snacks to fresh vegetables and it only cost us $56. I have already been feeling a lot better, and we have only been eating more vegetables since the beginning of the week. I think the other thing that really provoked me to wanting to be healthier is that I realized that Brandon and I will probably have children in the next couple years, and I really want to set a good example for them and also have the energy and feel good enough to keep up with them.

I don’t know what else this year will hold, but I am excited and ready to go where God leads.  Please leave a post with some of the things you are looking forward to in the New Year or send me an email: mrsonmain@gmail.com.
